Meet Bret Burgener

Farming is family business for the Burgeners – and has been so for three generations. Bret raises 15,000 hogs per year with his three brothers Brad, Chad and Chris. For over a century, this close-knit family has worked their 2,500-acre farm near Moweaqua, Illinois.

The Burgeners are firm believers in raising pigs without antibiotics. Even though it takes much more work to raise pigs naturally, they are rewarded by the challenge. It just takes better animal husbandry skills and detail to raise pigs this way; but they feel prevention, rather than treatment of disease, is the way to go.

During the rare weekend away from the farm, Bret, his wife Angela and his kids Abbey, Brock and Alaina camp at state parks, especially Shelbyville State Park in Illinois.
